Obituary: Death of Walter Turner

The many Jackson county friends in and around Alpha were greatly grieved last
week to learn of the death of Walter Turner at his home in Elm Creek township,
Martin County. Mr Turner passed away Wednesday morning, October 28th, after
an illness of about three weeks. He suffered a stroke, which was followed by a
severe attack of Bright's disease.

Mr. Turner was born at Harristown, Illinois, in 1862, where he resided until
1897 when he moved to Jackson county and settled on a farm near Jackson. Twelve
years ago he moved to Martin county. At the time of his death he was 63 years,
months and 17 days of age.

On December 19, 1883, Mr. Turner was married at Weldon, Illinois, to Florence
Etta Crossen. To this union were born nine children, all of who are living. Mrs
Crossen was burned to death on February 19, 1915, when an oil can exploded
while she was kindling the fire in the kitchen range.

Mr. Turner was an active worker in the church and Sunday school, and was
considered an upright and honest citizen by all who knew him. He leaves a large
circle of friends and neighbors who deeply mourn his passing.

The surviving children are: Mrs. Frank Butte, Jackson; Mrs. Earl Tenney,
Monterey: Orlando Turner, Atlantic, Iowa; Essel Turner, Triumph; Vernon Turner,

The death of Mr. Turner was made doubly hard to the relatives as the following
day they received a message from Niantic, Illinois, announcing the demise of Mr
Turner's uncle Horace Prichett.

The funeral services of Mr. Turner were held Saturday afternoon, October 31st,
rfr4om the family home; Rev. C. J. Garber of Enterprise township, a close frien
of the deceased for over thirty years, conducting the rites. The choir from the
Assembly of God at Sherburn sang several beautiful songs preceding and after th
services. Interment was made in the Sherburn cemetery.

An account appeared in our last issue of the sad death of Mrs. Walter Turner of
Elm Creek twp. who died Feb. 19th, from severe burns received in a kerosene
explosion at her home.

Immediately after the accident, physicians were summoned from Sherburn and
Monterey.

They did all that medical aid could do but the deadly fire had done its work an
mortal hands could not save the dear wife and mother for her loved ones. She
realized her condition and asked for all her children to be sent for and her on
brother
that lives near Alpha, also her aged father, who reached her bedside before the
end came. Her other four brothers and sisters live in different states.

Illinois when a child, where she grew to womanhood. She was united in marriage
to Mr. Walter Turner, Dec. 19, 1883. They resided at Weldon, IL until

Monterey; Orlando, Essel, Vernon, Lotus, James, Phyllis and Elvera, who are at
home. She always had a host of friends, being of an amiable disposition
wanting every one to have a good time and helping others whenever she could.

She passed away, having been a christian ; her last words were a prayer to her
heavenly father, asking him to continue his blessings on her husband and
children. The funeral was held at the residence in Elm Creek Monday at one
o'clock, Rev.
C. J. Garber officiating. His words were full of sympathy for the husband and
family. The singing was conducted by the Royal Neighbors who contributed a
beautiful wreath. The floral tributes were many and beautiful.
